Adobe After Effects CC 2024: How to Set Poster Frame

**Description:
**This tutorial will show you how to change the Composition Poster Frame in Adobe After Effects CC 2024 and toggle the Transparency Thumbnail grid on and off.

**Composition Poster Frame (Thumbnail):
**
This is the image thumbnail in the Project Panel that provides a preview of Comps & PreComps when selected.

**Default Poster Frame:
**
The first frame of any Comp/PreComp

How To Change Composition Poster Frame in After Effects:

  1. Open After Effects
  2. Go to ‘Project Panel’ (where files/assets are stored)
  3. Click on any Composition or PreComp
  4. Look in the top-left for the Poster Frame (Image Thumbnail)
  5. Drag CTI to any frame in Comp/PreComp
  6. Go to the top menu
  7. Click on ‘Composition’
  8. Click on ‘Set Poster Time’
  9. Click off selected Composition/PreComp
  10. Click on again to view new Poster Frame (thumbnail)
  11. Repeat to select new Poster Frame

How To Toggle On/Off ‘Transparency Thumbnail Grid’ in After Effects:

  1. Select any Comp/PreComp in the Project Panel with Transparent Background (Alpha Channel)
  2. Click on the Hamburger Menu (3 horizontal lines) next to ‘Project’
  3. Select ‘Transparency Thumbnail Grid’ and confirm there is a check mark
  4. Click off in an empty space and click back on to update Poster Frame
  5. All Comps/PreComps with Alpha Channels will show Transparency Grid when selected

How To ‘Disable Thumbnails in Project Panel’ in After Effects:

  1. Go to the top menu
  2. Click on ‘After Effects’
  3. Click on ‘Settings’
  4. Click on’Display’
  5. Tick the box ‘Disable Thumbnails in Project Panel’
  6. Click ‘OK’
  7. Click on any Comp/PreComp in the Project Panel and Poster Frame will be blank
