**Adobe After Effects CC 2024 (Click To Try or Buy)
How To Create Masks:
- Create New Composition
- Add Footage
- Select Pen Tool in the top Toolbar (G)
- Click to add points
- Click on Open Vertex to Close Mask
- Repeat to create additional paths
- Note: Overlap Masks in order to combine
How To Combine Paths Using Adobe Illustrator:
- Twirl open Layer in After Effects
- Twirl open Masks
- Shift+Click to Select All Masks
- Copy to Clipboard (Cmd/Ctrl + C)
- Open New Document in Adobe Illustrator (same size as AE Composition)
- Paste Masks from AE (Cmd/Ctrl + V)
- Go to Window Panel
- Select ‘Pathfinder’
- With Masks selected, click on the first button called ‘Unite’
- Select & Copy the united/joined Masks
- Copy to Clipboard (Cmd/Ctrl + C)
- Return to After Effects
- With All Masks selected, Paste from Illustrator (Cmd/Ctrl + V)
- Delete all but one of the Masks
- Now you should have 1 Mask combined
How To Combine Paths Using Adobe Photoshop:
- Twirl open Layer in After Effects
- Twirl open Masks
- Shift+Click to Select All Masks
- Copy to Clipboard (Cmd/Ctrl + C)
- Open New Document in Adobe Photoshop (same size as AE Composition)
- Paste Masks from AE (Cmd/Ctrl + V) and keep selected
- Click on ‘Path Operations’ icon in the top Toolbar
- Select ‘Combine Shapes’
- Click on ‘Merge Shape Components’ to combine
- Select all and Copy to Clipboard (Cmd/Ctrl + C)
- Return to After Effects
- With All Masks selected, Paste from Photoshp (Cmd/Ctrl + V)
- Delete all but one of the Masks
- Now you should have 1 Mask combined
Radio Waves Example:
- In After Effects, add New Solid (same as Comp Size)
- Select Pen Tool in the top Toolbar (G)
- Click to add points and create masks set to ‘Add’
- Click on Open Vertex to Close Mask
- Repeat to create additional paths
- Go to Effects & Presets Panel
- Search for ‘Radio’
- Drag ‘Radio Waves’ on to Solid Layer
- Change Wave Type to ‘Mask’
- Select All Masks
- Copy Masks & Paste in Illustrator or Photoshop and combine (follow previous instructions)
- Return to After Effects & Paste (Cmd/Ctrl + V)
- Select a Mask in the Effect Controls of Radio Waves under ‘Mask’
- Delete all other Masks
