This episode covers: what Domestika is, what the course covers, who it’s for, what you’ll learn, how to take it, how much it costs, how Mike got started working with Domestika, how he made the course, and how it’s gone since launch. There’s also a course trailer on YouTube.

What Is Domestika?

Domestika is a multi-lingual online learning platform offering courses and workshops across creative topics — design, illustration, photography, animation, and more. It originated in Spain, has been around for over 20 years, and is one of the largest platforms for creative education in the world, with over 8 million registered students across 50-plus countries and 8 languages.

The Course: Introduction to Adobe Audition

Adobe Audition is a digital audio workstation (DAW) used for recording, editing, mixing, and mastering audio — part of the Adobe Creative Cloud bundle, used by podcasters, content creators, film and video editors, sound designers, and musicians. If you’ve used Pro Tools, Logic Pro, Reaper, Audacity, or GarageBand, Audition serves the same role.

The course is for content creators, podcasters, musicians, sound designers, and anyone wanting to learn Audition, whether brand new to audio production or a seasoned pro switching DAWs. Domestika’s Basics courses are its best-selling format, aimed at beginners and broken into mini-courses with practice lessons at the end of each section.

What you’ll learn:

  1. Getting Started with Adobe Audition
  2. Adding Media and Recording Audio
  3. Editing: Waveform and Multitrack
  4. Effects and Processing
  5. Exporting and Saving Projects

You can find the course at mikemurphy.co/domestika. Pricing and any promotional discount mentioned in the original episode are specific to the March 2023 launch window and are not repeated here since they’re almost certainly stale — check the course page directly for current pricing.

Timeline for Making the Course

June 2022 — An acquisitions/curation manager based in NYC reached out, and Mike had an introductory call to discuss course ideas. Domestika didn’t yet have a Basics course on Audition, so that became the direction. Within days of the call, Mike received and signed a proposal.

July 2022 (Course Structure) — Mike met with his assigned content manager to learn how Domestika Basics courses are typically structured, then built out the course material himself. The first draft outline went in a few days later; review and edits took about two weeks before the final outline was approved.

August-October 2022 (Pre-Production) — Weekly video calls with his producer carried Mike from the start of production through final filming in Domestika’s NYC studios. After audio/video testing and learning Domestika’s formatting specs, he got the green light to start recording. Most of the course was filmed at his home studio in Naples, Florida, working through the outline in order — screen recordings with voiceover narration, made in ScreenFlow, the same tool he uses for all his tutorials. He made roughly 30 videos, 5-10 minutes each, over about 6 weeks, finishing recording the day before Hurricane Ian hit and knocked out his power for about 10 days.

Early November 2022 — Mike flew to Domestika’s studios in the Chelsea neighborhood of New York City the day before Halloween. The team rolled out the red-carpet treatment; he filmed the trailer, intro and outro videos, and all the promo photos and video used by Domestika’s editors. He left NYC proud of the experience, despite some nerves being in front of the camera on someone else’s turf.

The Final Stage — After filming wrapped, Mike moved to Domestika’s teacher management team to prepare for launch — updating his Domestika profile, finalizing course text, and preparing student resources and PDFs. It took about four months from filming to launch, which landed in early March 2023.

The Launch — Two weeks of teaser videos on social and YouTube led up to launch day on March 3rd, when Mike shared the official course trailer and went all-in on promotion. Commission is higher when students sign up through his referral link, so sharing that link directly supports the course.

How It’s Going

Just a couple of weeks post-launch at the time of recording, the course already had a couple hundred students enrolled, with hopes of growing into the thousands over time. Mike’s ongoing role is managing the student community — answering questions and providing support, while Domestika handles the platform logistics.

In Closing

The experience of creating a class on Domestika was entirely positive — professional, friendly, creative, and inspiring from start to finish.
